Independent Reading Expectations
- Students are encouraged to try a variety of genres of literature, and they are taken through the process of evaluating books and building volume in reading. Students conference with teachers using their writing notebooks either through IR letters or reading notes. Also, students are given page goals per week; these goals are monitored on a weekly and daily basis (i.e. 6th grade students need to read 250 pages per week during the 2nd and 3rd quarters). These goals are designed to dramatically increase your child’s reading comprehension and lifelong love of reading.
- Students are expected to read six books of their choice each quarter (three should be completed by midterm). We encourage students to explore a variety of genres but ultimately want to foster in them a love of reading. Students will have some time to read in class, but will also need to read outside of school to reach their goal. After reading a book, the student will log its information electronically.
- In 8th grade students are expected to read 40 books of their choosing during the school year. Time is provided in class, but it is expected that students spend at least 30 minutes at home reading in lieu of homework. Approximately once a week students write a reader's letter discussing what their thoughts are regarding the reading they have done over the last week. These letters serve as a means of communication between the student and the teacher about reading and the books they have read.
