Refugee Literacy & Social Studies Unit
In social studies, students learned about the background, history, and culture of Germany when Adolf Hitler led the country, Cuba when Fidel Castro led, and present-day Syria under the rule of Bashar al-Assad. Students were taught the impact these leaders had/have on each country and why their actions cause people to flee and seek refugee status.
While the students read the book Refugee in literacy, they discussed the Five Themes of Geography and how it applied to the country they were focused on in literacy, and they created a presentation that was shared with classmates, teachers, and community members during a gallery walk in the media center.
