These Moai statues were carved by my 6th grade Social Studies students. The statues are symbolic of the events that took place on Easter Island (Rapa Nui).
*The stones students carved were donated by couple in their sixties. Mr. Welch shared with me that students were asked to write a letter to the couple both thanking them for the materials and to explain the history and importance of the Polynesian culture and the statues. I love the use of authentic assignments. Students were very excited to complete their statues and share their learning! Check out all the pictures below and please come visit the Media Center to see all the statues on display.*
